20+ Practical (& Unusual) Holiday Gift Ideas
Maybe it’s all the stuff going on in the world these days that’s making people nervous about a very uncertain future. Perhaps that’s why folks are so focused on practical gifts this holiday season.
Today I want to tell you about a number of great practical gift ideas. But I also want to throw in some fun gifts. After all, the holiday season is a time for joy, and I don’t want to make this all about serious stuff.
One thing to remember before I get into these ideas is to order your gifts soon. Like now. Supply chain issues are still with us, and if there’s a rail strike, they’re going to get worse in a hurry.
Today is the first day of our 12 Days of Christmas event, so let’s start off with the practical gifts for folks who love to prepare. The gifts you know loved ones and friends will appreciate and use.
7 items everyone could use
Power – I’m talking about our solar-powered Patriot Power Generator 1800 and Patriot Power Sidekick. They can keep your appliances and devices running when the power is out.
Survival Food – Designed to last 25 years under proper storage conditions, 4Patriots Survival Food comes in a wide variety of sizes.
Communication – Our solar-powered Liberty Band Radio can alert you to dangerous weather before you receive any other warnings. It can save lives.

RV and Camping – Our StarFire Camp Stove and Sun Kettle Solar Cooker can help you cook food when there is no electricity available.
Home & Garden – Our Gardening Tool and Storage set will help you plant and take care of crops that grow from the Victory Garden Seed Vault.
No ‘normal” gift ideas here
As promised, here are some gift ideas that are not necessarily considered “normal.”
Maybe one or more of them will resonate with you as something that would be appropriate for a loved one, friend, co-worker or neighbor.
Granted, one person’s idea of “unusual” might be someone else’s “normal.” It’s subjective. And not every gift will be ideal for everyone on your list.
But I can assure you that you won’t find any of the more typical holiday gift ideas here, such as ties, sweaters, pajamas, toasters, makeup products and gift cards. So, here we go…
Wireless earbuds
One gift that just about anyone would appreciate is wireless earbuds. The sound is of high quality and they are super convenient for anyone relaxing, working out, walking, running or traveling.
Most people listen to their favorite music on their earbuds. But the recipient does not need to be a music lover.
Plenty of people enjoy listening to podcasts. Others spend all day on their phones.
Earbuds are not cheap and they do have to be charged regularly. But they pack a lot of value in a small, lightweight gift.
Cellphone stand
If you’re like most Americans, you probably use your cellphone often. Maybe not as much as a teenager, but making and receiving phone calls is only one component of the uses we’ve found for them.
I’d say the only annoying thing about a cellphone is having to hold it while using it. But with a cellphone stand, that’s not necessary.
These adjustable and collapsible stands make it easy to set up your phone on a desk and use it to make calls, read e-books, watch videos, etc.
They’re usually made of sturdy aluminum. Here’s the best part… they’re very affordable.
Electronic reader
When it comes to books, are you old school or do you prefer the more modern way of reading? Personally, I like the feel of a physical book in my hands. But I also own a Kindle because it’s very convenient to carry around and travel with.
There are plenty of folks who prefer electronic readers even at home, and for about $75 to $140 you can provide them with a new Kindle Paperwhite.
With a good-sized screen that’s glare-free and a battery that lasts a long time, it’s tough to beat an easily handled item that can store thousands of books.
Easy on the eyes and waterproof, it can even be taken to the beach. For another $25 you can add an attractive fabric cover.
MasterClass
Can you teach an old dog new tricks? I believe you can. More to the point, no matter what your age, it’s not too late to learn something new.
There are many ways to do this, of course, but MasterClass may be one of the best. And it could make a great gift for that tough-to-buy-for person who’s always looking for a new challenge.
It’s not cheap – an annual subscription comes to $15 per month. But the huge variety of online classes taught by the world’s best artists, leaders and icons makes it worth it.
There are more than 100 instructors including chef Gordon Ramsey and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. They teach classes in food, music, writing, business and science & tech. As well as sports & gaming, home & lifestyle, arts & entertainment, and more.
10 more for fun
Here are 10 more holiday gift ideas to consider:
- Laptop lap desk. I’m sure you know folks who work predominantly from home these days. A small, lightweight and very portable lap desk can be used even while horizontal on a couch. The underneath cushion conforms to your lap.
- Pasta and noodle maker. For the chef or chef wannabe on your list, this gift is designed to make pasta in a variety of shapes including spaghetti, fettuccini, penne and even a dumpling shape.
- Cuffed beanie. January and February – and March in some areas – promise to be cold. Great for men and women, they’re very comfortable and will keep your head warm when outdoors.
- Hand lotion. I don’t know about you, but the months of the year when the furnace is on means dry, cracked skin, especially on the hands. Hand lotion helps, but read the ingredients carefully to get a natural moisturizer.
- Hand warmer. Speaking of hands, some of us experience cold hands and feet as we age, especially in the winter. A rechargeable hand warmer can stay warm for three to four hours on a full charge.
- Science fun. Perfect for young kids on your list, Amazing Science from Good Housekeeping is an activity they can do alone or with adults. They’ll learn how things work while conducting 80-plus experiments.
- Personalized family mugs. Don’t you hate it when you find your favorite mug in the sink because someone has used it? With personalized coffee mugs, you don’t have to worry about that.
- Murder Mystery Puzzle Game. This game allows users to solve murder mysteries while they’re putting the pieces together. It’s something the whole family can have fun doing together.
- Slippers. Some of your loved ones probably won’t be going outside much this winter, so why not make them as comfortable as possible in their homes? Make sure the slippers you purchase have good traction.
- Socks. Wait, how can socks be an unusual holiday gift? The answer is when they are multi-colored with a wide variety of shapes and designs. Ideal for young people and the young at heart.
Patriot Power Cell
I’m going to close this communication by returning briefly to practicality. And it doesn’t get much more practical than a power bank for your electronic devices.
Backup power was already understood to be important before we began selling the Patriot Power Cell. With frequent power outages, it’s even more crucial to have convenient backup power at the ready.
The Patriot Power Cell is really a pocket-sized power plant. And since it’s often needed when other power sources are unavailable, it’s great to know it can be charged with just the power of the sun.
It’s rugged to withstand the elements, and it has a built-in flashlight. Knowing you can stay connected to loved ones in an emergency with this reliable power source provides plenty of peace of mind.
The Patriot Power Cell has become so popular that most people buy them in 4-packs. And right now until 12/12, you get access to a Buy 4 Get 1 FREE deal.

Keep Looters at Bay Following a Natural Disaster… and Always
Many of us have been victims of a natural disaster. Or perhaps more than one. And even if we haven’t, we’ve seen the devastation that results in other parts of the country. Such as in Florida and South Carolina recently with Hurricane Ian.
Whether it’s an extreme weather event or some other crisis, lives are sometimes lost. Buildings including homes are often destroyed. Water purity is compromised. And blackouts are pretty much inevitable.
Trying to deal with these and other problems following a disaster is a major challenge. The last thing any of us needs at this stage is to worry about looting.
Unfortunately, it’s a common occurrence in the aftermath of an emergency. There are people who take advantage of those who’ve just been slammed by misfortune.
They swoop in, take what hasn’t been damaged and disappear. And when folks return to assess damage to their home, they discover some of their prized possessions are missing.
Prosecuted as burglars
Is looting different from burglary? It’s usually very similar. But it can be differentiated by the timing of the crime.
Generally it’s associated with the days following a major problem that forces people from their homes.
Fortunately, looters can be charged, convicted and punished in the same manner as if they’d broken into a home when things were calm.
Looters typically steal items from businesses and homes they can resell. Unless they want to keep items for themselves. Electronics including TVs and computers are frequently grabbed. Some also steal clothing and cash.
Protect your property
In a moment I’ll give you my recommendation for keeping looters at bay following a crisis.
Both during “normal” times and following a disaster. Regardless of whether you stayed in your home or had to evacuate.
Right now, though, I want to provide you with a few examples of what I’m talking about.
When we envision ourselves in the place of these victims, it makes us determined to see that it doesn’t happen to us.
Looters emerge after Ian
Not surprisingly, looters came out of the woodwork immediately following the recent Category 4 Hurricane Ian that devastated parts of Florida and South Carolina.
After arresting seven men for allegedly looting in Fort Myers Beach following the storm, Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno declared there would be “law and order” in the county.
He also said that those who attempt to take advantage of others impacted by the hurricane are “the lowest form of scum.”
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis previously warned looters. “Don’t even think about looting,” he announced. “Don’t even think about taking advantage of people in this vulnerable situation.” He also reminded looters that “we are a Second Amendment state.”
50 arrested in Florida
Immediately following Hurricane Irma in Southern Florida in 2017, looters raced to abandoned homes and businesses.
They knew there would be plenty of opportunities for looting. Millions of people had been ordered to evacuate.
In Miami-Dade County, 50 suspected looters were arrested during and after the storm. In addition to their thefts, they caused property damage.
Some looters even stole a downed power pole. They were caught by police officers while trying to strap it to the top of their vehicle.
But only a fraction are caught
The following year, Hurricane Michael came calling. And once again looters attempted to cash in.
Authorities arrested an average of 10 looters per night in the Florida Panhandle. That was only a small percentage of the looters out and about.
There was only so much officers could do. Even while working 16-hour shifts. Some of them had seen serious damage to their homes as well.
When those who’d evacuated returned, many found the combination of 150 mile-per-hour winds and looters had destroyed or stolen everything of value.
Looting after Hurricane Ida
Hurricane Ida, which ravaged Louisiana and other states in 2021, is still fresh in some people’s minds. And so is some of the looting that took place afterward.
Two men drove a white pickup truck through heavily damaged Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. They stole whatever of value they could find.
A business owner said all but 20 of his 140 tires were stolen. As well as a welding machine and a tire machine.
Ricky Adam is the Hancock County sheriff. He said, “There’s always opportunists – in my opinion too lazy to work for anything – and they take the opportunity to take other people’s things.”
Solar Sentry Security Light
One of the best ways to convince looters to skip your house is lighting. Looters prefer dark places where they can’t be observed.
The brighter the outside of your home is during the night, the fewer hiding places a looter can use. Bright lights will help expose would-be thieves to security cameras and neighbors. As well as to pedestrians and you.
My suggestion for outdoor home lighting is the Solar Sentry Security Light. Regardless of whether you have a security system, you can benefit from increased lighting outside your home.
This is an ultra-bright, solar-powered, smart light that can stun and scare away criminals. Its battery is powerful (2200 mAh).
Its passive infrared sensors can detect humans and animals from 39 feet away. And then flood the area with 118 super-bright LED lights. That’s 1,000 lumens.
And yet it weighs only a bit over one pound and is simple to install. Nearly weather-proof and waterproof, it recharges with the free power of the sun. Thanks to a built-in solar panel.
A portable line of defense
The Solar Sentry Security Light is your home’s first line of defense. Advanced motion detection technology and remote controlled settings put you in command.
You can choose your settings options. Such as the light only turning on when it detects motion. Or the light staying on all night and brightening when it detects motion. Or the light staying on all night at the same brightness level.
And if you ever need one of them elsewhere, just take it with you. To your RV or your cabin or even a basketball court.
Many people buy more than one so they can light up both the front and back yards. As well as their driveways and walkways.
When you buy four – to cover every corner of your home – you get the best price per unit and four free gifts including a HaloXT Tactical Flashlight and free shipping and handling to boot.
Paralyzed Veterans of America Helps Vets Live With Dignity
For the second year in a row, 4Patriots donated a variety of items to the Wisconsin chapter of Paralyzed Veterans of America for their fundraiser auction. Scott Griffith, the organization’s Chief Operating Officer, said 4Patriots products are “always a fan favorite with the military demographic.”
One of the many tragedies of war has always been paralysis suffered by soldiers defending their country. Service members who return from war with spinal cord injuries face incredible challenges.
Americans have always been grateful for their service, but until recently society had not yet prepared for the many needs these paralyzed soldiers would have.
So, some of those heroes from World War II – determined to live with dignity back in their home country – established Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) in 1946.
To this day, the organization is dedicated to serving veterans. As well as to medical research, advocacy and civil rights for all people with disabilities.
PVA’s mission is to change lives and build brighter futures for seriously injured heroes. That mission has resulted in the empowerment of our brave men and women who are regaining what they fought for: their freedom and independence.
4Patriots contributes to PVA fundraiser
In September 2022, the Wisconsin chapter of PVA hosted its annual Membership Banquet fundraiser in which 4Patriots was proud to contribute for the second consecutive year. The event, held in Racine, Wisconsin, included a live auction, silent auction and raffle baskets.
We donated a Patriot Power Cell, 72-Hour Survival Food Kit, HaloXT Tactical Flashlight and Personal Water Filter for the event’s auction.
“Your products were a sought-after basket, trust me,” said Scott Griffith, a PVA volunteer for seven years and currently serving as Chief Operation Officer and government relations director for the Wisconsin branch. It’s the only veteran 501(c3) in Wisconsin to maintain a four-star rating from Charity Navigator.
“Your preparedness items are always a fan favorite with the military demographic.” Scott said he originally discovered 4Patriots when an ad popped up on his Facebook feed. He said he immediately recognized the survival items as “cool products our audience would enjoy.”
8th generation combat soldier stricken with paralysis
If anyone was predestined to be a member of the U.S. military, it was Scott. He was born at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida.
After enlisting in the Army at age 17 and serving in the 24th Infantry Division in Iraq during the Gulf War, he became his family’s eighth generation of combat soldiers dating back to the mid-1700s in Boston, Massachusetts.
Unfortunately, Scott was forced to retire from the military due to a tumor inside his spinal cord. In 2010 he developed Brown-Sequard syndrome, a rare neurological condition that caused him to lose sensation in his left leg and foot, as well as fine motor skills in his right hand.
“I’m blessed to be alive,” Scott said. “I’ve had a cancerous tumor inside my spinal cord for 23 years. It’s been surgically removed twice, but it regrows despite radiation and chemotherapy. I’ve rehabbed myself out of a wheelchair twice now.”
$1 billion secured for paralyzed vets & families
During the 75 years of its existence, PVA has been a support system for our nation’s paralyzed and disabled heroes.
The organization has helped millions of veterans, their family members, caregivers and those living with spinal cord injury and disease (SCI/D).
As of 2020, $1 billion has been secured for the vets and families PVA represents. Some $280 million in earned benefits has been received for those vets.
In addition, $78 million has been paid in adaptive housing and automobile grants. And $948,000 in grants have been funded to SCI/D research and education.
Adaptive sports athletes hone their skills
PVA, which has partnered with two veterans’ charitable groups near and dear to the heart of 4Patriots – Team Rubicon and Fisher House Foundation – also offers a wide variety of adaptive sports and recreational opportunities throughout the year and across the U.S.
“I’m very passionate about adaptive sports,” said Scott, who is also a member of the advisory council for the Reeve Foundation Military & Veterans Program.
“For just about any Olympic sport, we can do a modified version in wheelchairs. Including track and field, basketball and many others. Personally, I participate in air rifle.
“We had our first adaptive sports boot camp in Franklin, Wisconsin last year. We brought in 26 athletes and honed their skills for national wheelchair games.
“I also get a lot of energy out of advocating for the Americans with Disabilities Act. We want accommodations for paralyzed people to become the norm and not the exception.”
Volunteering 60 hours per week
Anyone who has suffered paralysis or other serious injury while serving their country has certainly earned the right to sit back and take rather than give.
But Scott Is different. He’s out there volunteering 60 hours per week to help other paralyzed veterans in their time of need. We asked him why.
“Growing up military, that’s who I am,” he said. “It’s what I choose to continue to do. I get a lot of energy out of making a difference in someone’s life.
“I’m very blessed to be alive and be in a position where I can give back. I’m more ambulatory than many others who have been paralyzed. Just being able to walk into one of our meetings is a gift.
“I’m not done yet. I plan on sticking around for a little while. I’m privileged to work with individuals who aren’t as fortunate and have lesser abilities. Living with a wheelchair is a tough existence. That’s why I volunteer – to make their lives better.
“I tell people that every day is a bonus. Don’t take your health for granted. If you can make a small difference in someone’s life, do it. Think before you speak.
“A lot of people have invisible disabilities. Just because you can’t see them in a wheelchair doesn’t mean they’re not dealing with something. Kindness and consideration go a long way.”
How Do I Know Which Emergency Radio to Choose?
There’s a very good reason why nearly every preparedness list includes an emergency radio.
When extreme weather causes a power outage, you need something reliable to provide you with details about the storm and where it’s headed. And you need it quickly.
With violent weather becoming more frequent and more intense every year, owning an emergency weather radio has never been more important.
In keeping with our BlackOUT Friday Event, today I want to tell you exactly what to look for in an emergency radio. There are many choices out there. Some are good, some… not so much. The key is to find one that offers everything you’ll need.
Say yes to NOAA
The first thing you should do when it comes to selecting an emergency radio is make sure it’s a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather radio.
Having access to critical information is key to surviving in any emergency. With a NOAA weather radio, you’re certain to receive timely information about weather threats in your area. Including evacuation routes and other breaking news.
These radios broadcast official National Weather Service warnings, watches, forecasts and other hazard information 24/7. If you program your county’s six-digit code into it, a loud alarm will sound when dangerous weather approaches.
Some of these weather radios allow you to choose which particular alerts you want to receive. And which you don’t.
Plenty of charging options
OK, now you’re set with weather alerts. Is there anything else you need in an emergency radio? Yes, plenty.
Let’s start with how to keep it charged. A dead emergency radio is useless, so don’t choose one that gives you only one or two options.
You want a radio with a powerful battery inside. But you also want other ways to charge it.
Including plugging it into an outlet, exposing the radio’s solar panel to the sun and cranking it up by hand.
Power bank with a flashlight
Any of those options will keep your emergency radio charged. But you also want to have a radio that can “share the wealth.”
You may find yourself in a position where you need to charge your cellphone. Or a tablet, e-reader, camera, flashlight, cooling fan or another item. Select an emergency radio that can do all that.
There’s no guarantee you’ll have daylight when a weather emergency interrupts your life.
You may also need to light your path. So, make sure your radio includes a bright flashlight.
Light, compact and durable… with extras
Other features you want in an emergency radio are just as practical. For example, you don’t want one that’s heavy. It would be a burden to carry in your hand or in a bag.
You also want a radio that’s compact yet durable. One that can take a few dings without getting damaged. And what about some extras the average person might not think about?
Choose an emergency radio that includes a sturdy metal clip so you can attach it to a backpack or belt loop. Select one that has a charging indicator so you always know how much juice it has. Pick one with an earphone jack so you can listen discreetly.
Finally, you want an emergency radio that’s priced right. If for no other reason than so you can buy several of them. For your home and vehicle, and even as gifts for loved ones.
My recommendation
It may be difficult to believe, but every feature I mentioned as being important in an emergency radio is included in one radio – the 4Patriots Liberty Band Emergency Solar Radio.
Of course, this is not a coincidence. We started with the end in mind with this product. We made sure this tactical information hub features NOAA weather alerts, with seven 24/7 weather channels and AM/FM and shortwave radio.
We insisted it include an LCD display clock with alarm and an ultra-bright flashlight.
We made it lightweight with the ability to recharge with the power of the sun.
We added a hand crank for emergency starting. We even made sure that it could power up other devices when you need them most. Including your cellphone.
I feel like we’ve made the 4Patriots Liberty Band Emergency Solar Radio as desirable as we possibly can. But if you need any extra incentive, how’s this?
If you purchase three of them, I’ll provide you with free shipping and toss in a few bonuses. Including a free Patriot Power Cell, a free 72-Hour Survival Food Kit, a free HaloXT Tactical Flashlight and a $25 gift certificate.
How to Stay Safe in a Violent Storm
With hurricane season finally starting to ramp up, I thought this would be a good time to remind you about the best ways to stay safe in a big storm.
Even if you don’t live in a hurricane zone, these tips could come in handy for dealing with extreme weather. And remember, Hurricane Sandy ended up affecting 24 different states in 2012.
Folks in Puerto Rico certainly don’t need any reminders. They just got slammed by Hurricane Fiona, causing their fragile power grid to go down. The Category 1 storm caused some 1.4 million people on the island to lose power. The storm then soaked the Dominican Republic.
Puerto Rico was without power for several days, according to LUMA Energy, the private company that handles the transmission and distribution of electricity in the U.S. territory. Puerto Rico Governor Pedro Pierluisi said, “The damages that we are seeing are catastrophic.”
Plan ahead and stock up on supplies
More Atlantic hurricanes are expected to develop over the next month or so, with Ian being the big one closing in on Florida. As with all disasters, the key is to be prepared.
First things first. Have an emergency response plan in place in case a hurricane or other big storm heads your way. This plan should include a 72-hour survival kit and knowing your evacuation routes.
It’s also crucial to have backup power and plenty of survival food and water stockpiled. The American Red Cross recommends a three-day supply for evacuation and a two-week supply for home.
Before it strikes
One thing that is impractical to do in advance – but which you should be ready to start executing at a moment’s notice when you hear a hurricane is heading your way – is preparing your home. This involves:
- Boarding up windows with plywood or installing storm shutters.
- Securing your roof and siding to your house frame with straps.
- Reinforcing garage doors, trimming long tree branches and bringing outdoor furniture into your house.
- Familiarizing yourself and your family with utility shut-off switches and valves in your house in case you need to evacuate.
Other activities you should engage in prior to a hurricane approaching your area are:
- Familiarize yourself with emergency routes and shelters. Print out those routes and keep them in your vehicle’s glove compartment.
- Make yourself aware of community shelters in your neighborhood just in case you need to use one.
- Make sure your car has a full gas tank and that important items such as a first-aid kit are in your car.
During and after
During a hurricane, assuming there was no evacuation order and you decided to ride it out, monitor emergency radio and mainstream media reports.
Close your blinds and move your most valuable possessions away from windows. Then stay away from those windows, close interior doors and remain in your home’s interior rooms.
Once the storm has passed, continue to monitor weather reports and try to use flashlights instead of candles if your power is out.
When you return after evacuating, keep an eye out for flooding, ruptured gas lines and damaged structures. Be aware that water may have become contaminated. Report any damage sustained by your home to your insurance agent as soon as possible.
Items to gather
Of course, there’s more to preparing for a hurricane or other type of storm than survival food and water. You’d be wise to have these items handy as well:
- Flashlight and extra batteries. Or better yet, a solar-powered, tactical flashlight.
- Battery-powered or hand-crank emergency weather radio
- First-aid kit and medications
- Multi-purpose tool
- Sanitation and personal hygiene items
- Copies of personal documents
- Family and emergency contact information
- Blankets, extra clothing, boots, gloves, etc.
- Cash
- Maps
$500 off our bestselling generator
I saved one of the most important items until the end. A major storm such as a hurricane will almost assuredly bring power outages. You need to be able to restore power quickly to keep food fresh, lights on and electrical devices working.
And there’s no time like the present. Only until midnight October 2, we’re offering our bestselling generator – the Patriot Power Generator 1800 – at a $500 discount. You heard me right.
A storm featuring power outages is not going to wait for you to get ready for it, so now is the time to prepare. This generator – which you can charge for free with the sun – can power your fridge, freezer and much more.
Fume-free and silent, it’s safe to use indoors. Unlike gas-powered generators that can be very dangerous when not used properly. In addition to this $500 off deal, we’re also offering you an interest-free payment plan. Plus a 100% guaranteed money-back offer if you’re not satisfied.
You can’t lose with this life-saving backup power deal. But you and your family can certainly win.
Can a Solar-Powered Flashlight Really Do All This?
With our 7 Days of Solar Event going on now – right smack in the middle of National Preparedness Month – today I want to tell you about one of our most popular devices that you can charge with just the power of the sun. So stay tuned.
When you need light in the darkness, a flashlight is your go-to tool, right? Well, it wasn’t always this way. When men and women needed light before electricity, they used torches.
Those torches were followed eventually by candles, oil lamps, and kerosene lamps. Each involved a flame that had to be carried, so there was always the possibility of danger.
Near the end of the 19th century, the incandescent light bulb and the dry battery were invented.
Flash lights needed to rest
The flashlight was created in 1899 and there’s a good reason the word “flash” was used in its name. The small, incandescent electric light bulb was powered by batteries, with a contact switch turning the light on and off.
But these “flash lights” could not emit light for very long. They ran on zinc-carbon batteries that could not provide constant current for extended periods of time. The user had to give these flashlights frequent rests.
Over time, as batteries improved and tungsten replaced carbon filaments, the flashlight became more dependable and popular.
Most of today’s flashlights run on disposable or rechargeable batteries. They use incandescent light bulbs or LEDs (light-emitting diodes). Incandescent bulbs have a tungsten filament. LEDs are semiconductors that emit light.
Standard flashlights still the same
Today, there are two basic types of flashlights: standard and tactical. We’ve all probably used a standard flashlight at one time or another.
Many still require big batteries and they still turn on the same way and weigh about the same.
These basic everyday flashlights are handy when you’re looking for something under a couch. Or when you’re trying to find something in a dark closet. And, of course, when the power goes out in your home.
Standard flashlights are usually constructed from inexpensive aluminum or cheap plastic and low-grade steel. Many don’t last too long.
A variety of devices
Among the many flashlights we see today are incandescent bulb flashlights, LED flashlights and high-intensity discharge flashlights. Plus pressurized gas flashlights, solar-powered flashlights and headlamp flashlights.
As well as shake flashlights, USB-charging flashlights and utility flashlights. And heavy-duty flashlights and work flashlights.
They all have their place, and some are more effective than others. A high-intensity discharge flashlight, for example, can deliver a very bright light. That’s due to an electrical current that runs through a ball of ionized gas.
A shake flashlight turns on by shaking it. It’s powered by magnets that cause a reaction to produce light. A headlamp flashlight is ideal if you need to shine light on something you’re using both hands to work on.
Tactical flashlights the best choice
Tactical flashlights are far superior to standard flashlights. So why settle for anything less?
Tactical flashlights look and feel much different. They’re more durable and weather-resistant. And they feature a variety of settings, such as strobe and SOS. Once you get used to a tactical flashlight, you’ll probably never use a standard flashlight again.
Most tactical flashlights are made with a higher grade of aluminum and are armor-coated. Normally they are lighter in weight than basic flashlights. And they can resist shocks, corrosion and whatever the weather throws at them.
The average standard flashlight gives you about 10 feet of brightness. That’s approximately 100 lumens. Tactical flashlights provide brightness to about 50 feet. And they give you visibility up to about 100 yards.
What to look for
Here’s what I look for in a tactical flashlight:
- Ultra-bright LED flashlight
- Solar panel
- Power bank
- SOS light & strobe
- Work light
- Seatbelt/rope splitter
- Glass-breaking hammer
- Compass
- Magnet
- Lightweight
- Anti-slip handle
- Adjustable wrist strap
Could a tactical flashlight save your life?
A tactical flashlight is not only superior to a regular flashlight. It could also save your life. Here are six ways that could happen.
Spotting danger in the darkness. If you find yourself walking in a dark area – due to a power outage or if you’re camping in the woods – a flashlight is a big help for finding your way and avoiding pitfalls. You might even spot a human with bad intent or an animal looking for its next meal. Spotting either of them before you get too close could save your life.
Escaping from a hazard zone. If there were a chemical spill near where you live and the power were knocked out, a flashlight might be the only tool at your disposal to help you get out of the region as quickly and safely as possible. The same thing would be true if you were dealing with a fire, flood, earthquake or other disaster that would require you to get away quickly.
Signaling for help. If you get lost in the wilderness, whether during an escape from a bad situation or just a camping trip, or are stranded somewhere, a flashlight could be used to signal for help. Especially if your flashlight has a built-in SOS component or a strobe function to it. Light carries a long distance in a short amount of time – something like 186,000 miles per second – and it will attract attention if someone is able to observe it.
Self-defense from an attacker. There are weapons that would be more useful than a flashlight if you’re attacked. A gun comes to mind first, of course. But most of us don’t have immediate access to that type of weapon when we’re out and about. And there are usually restrictions on how and when they can be carried. A flashlight can temporarily blind an attacker to allow an escape, while its barrel can be used for a counterattack.
A vehicle breakdown. If you have to get out of your vehicle after pulling off to the side of the road, your hazard lights should help other drivers see your car. But they won’t help you see what’s going on under the hood. A flashlight will come in very handy in this situation, as it would if you were changing a tire. And if you have to abandon the car and walk somewhere in the dark, it will help light your way.
Charging a cellphone for an emergency call. If your cellphone is dead and you need to make a call for help, some tactical flashlights will enable you to charge it. That phone call could allow you to escape a very dangerous situation.
Everybody needs a flashlight. And several of them are much better than having just one. But make sure you have tactical flashlights because they can do so much more.
HaloXT Tactical Flashlight
Now that I’ve told you what to look for in a tactical flashlight, let me also tell you that you don’t need to look any farther. Because I have the ideal one for you. It’s called the HaloXT Tactical Flashlight from 4Patriots.
In addition to several light functions, this flashlight has small solar panels so you can charge it with just the power of the sun. As well as a glass breaker, a seatbelt cutter and a compass. The HaloXT also has an anti-slip handle and an adjustable wrist strap.
Despite the fact that it’s small, lightweight and easy to handle, it’s extremely sturdy. That’s because it’s made from aluminum alloy. It can handle abuse. And that includes dropping it on the floor or ground, and banging it against something.
It will continue to perform perfectly. This flashlight is weather-resistant, shock-resistant and corrosion-resistant. It even includes a magnet so you can secure it to your car and use both hands to work.
Here’s how you can get yours… or better yet, several of them.

Your Ultimate Emergency Preparedness Checklist
National Preparedness Month is underway. I believe all Americans should ask themselves this question. What will come first, a disaster or your preparedness?
For far too many Americans, the disaster came first. And it left them wishing it had been the other way around. We see it frequently on the news. Extreme weather knocks out power, and most folks don’t have a generator.
Supply-chain problems result in food shortages, and most folks don’t have survival food stockpiled. Water contamination makes tap water undrinkable, and most folks don’t have a water purification system.
And now hurricane season is in session and there’s war in Eastern Europe. We’ve got rising food prices and potential shortages. And a pandemic that refuses to go away. Many Americans are finding themselves short on preparedness supplies.
Don’t wait any longer
4Patriots has been in the preparedness business for years now. But I don’t think I’ve ever seen a time when preparing for an uncertain future was more important than it is today.
It seems like every year we break one record or another for hurricanes or tornadoes. Extreme weather events are not only becoming more frequent. They’re also getting more intense.
Wildfires are growing in number each year. And in the amount of landscape and buildings they destroy.
Political upheaval in our divided nation has never been greater. Civil unrest threatens peace-loving citizens.
Self-reliance has gone mainstream
I don’t want this communication to be all doom and gloom. So let’s look at the bright side. If nothing else, self-reliance is finally going mainstream.
People now realize that FEMA and other relief organizations probably can’t save them in an emergency. They understand preparedness is the only thing that can help them and their families deal with the next crisis. And the one after that.
I like how the Ready.gov website states it. “Disasters don’t wait. Make your plan today.” Yep, there’s no time like the present.
If you’re reading this, you probably have a head start in the preparedness area. But whether you are experienced at prepping, a newcomer to the scene or somewhere in between, this information is for you.
Your preparedness checklist
So, what does preparedness look like? Here are some of my suggestions. Of course, we could always add more items.
◻ Six months’ worth of non-perishable food per person in your household
◻ At least one solar-powered generator (2 is better)
◻ Backup portable power banks
◻ One gallon of drinking water per person per day; and one-half gallon for other usages
◻ Water purification system
◻ Personal water heater
◻ Seed vault featuring non-GMO heirloom seeds
◻ Camp stove
◻ Tactical flashlights
◻ Battery-powered or hand-crank emergency weather radio
◻ Survival knife
◻ Fire starters
◻ Military compass
◻ Mess kit, including plates, bowls, cups and utensils
◻ Extra batteries
◻ Tools, including wrench and pliers, to turn off utilities
◻ First-aid kit, including prescription medications
◻ Plenty of extra clothing
◻ Sanitation and hygiene items
◻ Important family documents
◻ Pet food and other supplies
◻ Survival guides
◻ Ways to defend yourself and your property
◻ Cash
Preparedness = peace of mind
The physical benefits of preparedness are clear. You can see your survival food stockpile anytime you want to. You can hold your water purification devices in your hands. You can move your portable solar-powered generator into any room.
The emotional benefits of preparedness are not as obvious. But they’re just as real. Realizing you have adequate supplies to keep your family and yourself safe in an emergency instills confidence.
Knowing exactly what you and family members will do when a crisis occurs helps reduce fear of the unknown.
Taking steps to protect your home against intruders who may come calling after the stuff hits the fan reduces anxiety.
