What to Do After a Car Accident
Nobody likes to think about it. But it happens to just about everybody at one time or another.
I’m talking about a car accident. If you’ve been in one or more, I hope they’ve been minor.
There are no upsides to car accidents. Even if you avoid injury, there are usually repairs to deal with. And the possibility that your insurance premium will rise. And maybe being without your car for a while as it’s being fixed.
But like everything else, the better prepared you are for a car accident, the better you’ll be able to deal with it when it happens.
Millions of accidents every year
First a few statistics to let you know how prevalent this safety problem is. These come from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
In 2019, there were approximately 6,756,000 automobile accidents in America. About 1,916,000 involved injuries and 33,244 resulted in deaths.
On average, drivers were about three times more likely to suffer injuries or death than passengers.
Some of that is due to the fact that often the driver is the only person in the vehicle when an accident occurs.
The 10-step program
Here are 10 steps the Allstate Insurance Company and the AARP recommend taking immediately following a car accident.
1) Check yourself for injuries. If injured, call 911 or ask someone else to do so. If you’re seriously injured, try not to move. Wait for emergency personnel.
2) If you’re not too hurt to move, check on other passengers in your car and any other involved vehicles. If anyone is injured, call 911 or ask a bystander for help.
3) Get to safety. If your car is safe but might be causing a hazard in the road, move it to the side of the road. If you have to leave your car where it is, get yourself to safety by the side of the road or on a sidewalk.
4) Call 911. Whether an accident is considered a minor fender-bender or a major collision, calling the police is important. In some states, it’s legally required.
5) Wait for help to arrive. Turn off your engine and turn on your hazard lights if necessary. Road flares will come in handy if you’re on a dark road at night.
6) If it’s safe to do so, exchange information with the other driver(s) involved in the accident. This includes full name and contact information; insurance company and policy number; driver’s license and license plate number; type, color and model of the vehicle(s); and location of the accident. The Insurance Information Institute (III) recommends NOT discussing fault while exchanging this information. And never share your Social Security number or the coverage limits on your insurance policy. If emotions are running high or you believe the other driver might be impaired, return to your car.
7) Responding officers will fill out an accident report and document the scene. If police are unable to come to the accident site, drive to the nearest police station to fill out a report. Your insurer will probably need a copy of this report to help with the claims process.
8) The III recommends taking the following steps to protect yourself. Identify the responding officers (names and badge numbers). Get a copy of the police report. Take pictures of your car and the other car(s) involved in the accident, from different angles. As well as skid marks and property damage. Note the direction each vehicle was headed when the accident occurred, and where vehicle occupants were seated. If there are witnesses to the accident, try to get their names and contact information.
9) Notify your insurance agent either while at the scene or shortly after you arrive at your destination.
10) If you experience any pain following the accident, schedule a doctor’s appointment and document the findings. This could be very important for insurance purposes.
You may wish to print out the 10 steps listed above and keep them in your glove compartment.
HaloXT Tactical Flashlight
Of course, you should always keep a tactical flashlight in your car. The HaloXT Tactical Flashlight from 4Patriots is as sturdy as they come. Despite the fact that it’s small, lightweight and easy to handle.
It’s made from aluminum alloy so it’s very durable. It knows how to handle abuse. You can drop it or bang it, and it will still perform perfectly. It’s weather-resistant, shock-resistant and corrosion-resistant.
Now, the HaloXT Tactical Flashlight with its nine light functions and small solar panels will keep working even if you drop it. But you don’t want to drop it while you’re using it. That’s why we’ve given it an anti-slip handle and an adjustable wrist strap.
And if you’re ever in a car accident where you need some extra help, this flashlight can also cut a seatbelt and break a window, enabling you to escape. You don’t want to go anywhere without the HaloXT Tactical Flashlight.
Getting to the Heart of a Matter
When 4Patriots learns that an organization is conducting a preparedness workshop, it warms our hearts.
We love to see people taking this subject seriously. And helping others get ready for an uncertain future.
One organization recently conducting a preparedness workshop is Heart of a Matter Ministries. It’s located in Sherman, Texas.
Founder Tina Gardner experienced firsthand the effects of Winter Storm Uri in February 2021. And saw what it did to friends and neighbors. She knew it was essential to offer assistance.
She did that immediately (more on that in a moment). But she also started making plans for a preparedness workshop nine months later. 4Patriots donated 26 HaloXT Tactical Flashlights for workshop participants.
Uri Shows Need for Preparedness
“Earlier this year we experienced a weather-related emergency in Grayson County,” Tina said late last year, referring to Uri.
“Our ministry team delivered meals, blankets and water to local warming centers. A couple ministry members even filled up water trucks for farmers whose ponds froze. Their animals were unable to access water.
“Basically, we did anything we could to lessen the burden on the emergency responders.
“The inspiration for hosting this preparedness workshop came from understanding there are families who cannot afford the expense of basic preparations. I want to see them feel empowered and encouraged.
Reaching Out to 4Patriots
“Our workshop guests were families on fixed low income. As well as the elderly, single parents and disabled adults,” Tina continued.
“We reached out to local church congregations and the local housing authority. We wanted to specifically connect with individuals and families who fit these criteria.
“The Preparedness Workshop covered everything. Including having the skills to evaluate the situation quickly. And to take effective action to protect yourself and family.
“Also, having a family disaster plan and practicing the plan with drills. And assembling supplies in multiple locations to reduce the impact of hazards.
“While looking to purchase items for our guests, I chose 4Patriots. My husband and I have purchased items ourselves. We love that it is veteran-friendly, family-owned and made in the U.S.A.”
A Very Targeted Audience
Tina said her organization received many calls during Winter Storm Uri.
“Elderly people were calling us, saying their space heaters were breaking,” she said. “Whatever calls we got, we did our best to meet those needs.
“We took them to warming centers and other shelters. But we couldn’t help everyone. The deep freeze brought a greater awareness to the problem. That’s why putting a preparedness workshop together was so important.
“We reached out to partnering church organizations. All of our attendees were elderly, single moms, or those who didn’t have the means to prepare.”
Navigating a Challenging Path
Tina was born in Massachusetts. She moved to California as a teenager and now lives in Whitewright, Texas. She earned a degree in child psychology and an Administrative Certification from American River College. For 30 years, Tina was a court-appointed child advocate.
She said Heart of a Matter Ministries was birthed as a result of her challenging work as an advocate.
“It’s a hard reality to comprehend how spending so much of life trying to make a difference can result in not always seeing it play out,” she said. “We try to bring meaningful change to the lives of the families we serve. But it doesn’t happen overnight.
“The Lord took me through a journey of remembrances. And identifying how to break the chains of disfunction to allow families to take a turn and see change in their lives.
“He equipped me with the tools and the knowledge to take it where it is today. He showed me those tools in my own journey.”
Making the Public Aware
Heart of a Matter Ministries serves the Grayson County community. And beyond. Of the 123,300 Grayson County residents, 17,605 are living at or below the poverty level.
The county has numerous organizations providing support services and programs. But much of the general public is not aware of available resources.
Heart of a Matter Ministries serves as advocates and mentors. It connects people in the community to services and resources to meet immediate and long-term needs. As well as build circles of support.
The non-profit organization also has developed a database. This allows other ministries and public services to publish information regarding services and programs.
Life Skills and Career Readiness
Among services being utilized are job skill training and help with transitional housing. Programs include:
Advocacy, mentoring and counseling. When an individual is surrounded by healthy relationships, equipped with proper tools and supported by loved ones, everyday hurdles become less challenging.
Life enrichment program. The difference between poverty and a purpose-filled life can be knowledge and training. A range of life skills and career readiness classes is offered. Plus spiritual and personal growth workshops.
The Creators Studio. This is a space using arts and crafts to bring creativity and beauty. To the environment, community and each other. Creative art expression can bring joy, health and wellbeing.
Walking Hand in Hand
“We find it beneficial to walk along with these individuals,” Tina said. “Instead of just telling people where to go for help, we walk them to the next step.
“Their needs include being prepared to reenter the workforce. Plus how to present themselves in interviews.
“Some of our clients are walking through employment and housing needs simultaneously.”

You Know You Need an Emergency Radio… But Which One?
You’ve received a few emails from me in the past about emergency weather radios. The purpose was to tell you how important it is to have one handy. That’s why these radios are included in just about every bug-out bag list you’ve ever seen.
Based on how many of you have purchased the 4Patriots Liberty Band Emergency Solar Radio, I assume you don’t need any more convincing.
You realize that extreme weather is becoming more frequent and more violent. So, I’m not going to waste your time trying to convince you to add one to your survival stockpile.
But if you haven’t done so yet, I do want to provide some tips on what to look for in an emergency radio. Because there are many choices out there.
Say yes to NOAA
The first thing you should do when it comes time to select an emergency radio is make sure it’s a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather radio.
Having access to critical information is key to surviving in any emergency. With a NOAA weather radio, you’re certain to receive timely information about weather threats in your area. Including evacuation routes and other breaking news.
These radios broadcast official National Weather Service warnings, watches, forecasts and other hazard information 24/7. If you program your county’s six-digit code into it, a loud alarm will sound when dangerous weather approaches.
Some of these weather radios allow you to choose which particular alerts you want to receive. And which you don’t.
Plenty of charging options
OK, now you’re set with weather alerts. Is there anything else you need in an emergency radio? Yes, plenty.
Let’s start with how to keep it charged. A dead emergency radio is useless, so don’t choose one that gives you only one or two options.
You want a radio with a powerful battery inside. But you also want other ways to charge it.
Including plugging it into an outlet, exposing the radio’s solar panel to the sun and cranking it up by hand.
Power bank with a flashlight
Any of those options will keep your emergency radio charged. But you also want to have a radio that can “share the wealth.”
You may find yourself in a position where you need to charge your cellphone. Or a tablet, e-reader, camera, flashlight, cooling fan or another item. Select an emergency radio that can do all that.
There’s no guarantee you’ll have daylight when a weather emergency interrupts your life.
You may need to light your path. So, make sure your radio includes a bright flashlight.
Light, compact and durable… with extras
Other features you want in an emergency radio are just as practical. For example, you don’t want one that’s heavy. It would be a burden to carry in your hand or in a bag.
You also want a radio that’s compact yet durable. One that can take a few dings without getting damaged. And what about some extras the average person might not think about?
Choose an emergency radio that includes a sturdy metal clip so you can attach it to a backpack or belt loop. Select one that has a charging indicator so you always know how much juice it has. Pick one with an earphone jack so you can listen discreetly.
Finally, you want an emergency radio that’s priced right. If for no other reason than so you can buy several of them. For your home and vehicle, and even as gifts for loved ones.
My recommendation is…
The emergency radio I’m recommending will not be a surprise. I let the cat out of the bag back in the second paragraph.
And it might be difficult to believe, but every feature I mentioned as being important in an emergency radio is included in one radio – the 4Patriots Liberty Band Emergency Solar Radio.
Of course, this is not a coincidence. We started with the end in mind with this product. We made sure this tactical information hub features NOAA weather alerts, with seven 24/7 weather channels and AM/FM and shortwave radio.
We insisted it include an LCD display clock with alarm and an ultra-bright flashlight.
We made it lightweight with the ability to recharge with the power of the sun.
We added a hand crank for emergency starting. We even made sure that it could power up other devices when you need them most. Including your cellphone.
I feel like we’ve made the 4Patriots Liberty Band Emergency Solar Radio as desirable as we possibly can. But if you need any extra incentive, how’s this?
If you purchase three of them, I’ll knock a small amount off the price of each unit, provide you with free shipping, and toss in a few bonuses. Including a free Patriot Power Cell, a free HaloXT flashlight, a free 72-Hour Survival Food Kit and a free $25 gift certificate.
