The U.S. FDA has certified IOSAT Potassium Iodide tablets, which can be used during nuclear emergencies. Search the FDA Orange Book Database. There are only TWO brands of potassium iodide that can legally sold in the U.S. to prevent thyroid cancer from radiation exposure. EVERY Iosat™ batch is analyzed by the FDA for safety, quality, efficacy and 10-year shelf life sustainability. Iosat Potassium iodide tablets are a non-radioactive organic tablet ingested once daily, only during nuclear emergencies to help block radioactive iodine from being absorbed into your thyroid gland. This helps to reduce possibility for thyroid cancer, which is caused by radioactive iodine being absorbed into your thyroid. For adults, take one 130mg tablet by mouth per day, when alerted by health officials during a nuclear emergency, such as nuclear reactor accidents or use of nuclear weapons. The potassium Iodide, when absorbed into the stomach during digestion, breaks down and is converted to iodine in your body; which is readily absorbed by your thyroid gland in your neck. Once your thyroid gland has absorbed the maximum amount of iodine each day, it can not take in anymore iodine, such as radioactive iodine; which may have been absorbed into your body by breathing or eating contaminated food during a nuclear occurrence.
The chemical ID for Potassium Iodide is “KI”. Do not take Potassium Iodide until you are notified by public health alerts or your doctor or a healthcare provider. Potassium Iodide can cause harmful health side-effects, noted at bottom. Potassium Iodide is helpful only in specific nuclear emergencies. See table below for caution and dosage for adults and children.
The thyroid is a gland in the neck that plays an important role in many body functions. When the thyroid absorbs high levels of radioactive iodine, it can increase the risk of thyroid cancer many years after exposure in infants, children, and young adults.
The U.S. FDA has certified the IOSAT Potassium Iodide tablets, which can be used during nuclear emergencies. Adults over 40 should only take Potassium Iodide when recommended by officials when predicted exposure levels are high enough to possibly cause hypothyroidism.
One 130mg tablet of IOSAT Potassium Iodide offers protection for 24 hours to adults. Officials will tell you if another dose is needed after 24 hours. See Dosage recommendations below. IOSAT tablets have a score line for ½ (65mg) dose and a second score line for ¼ (32mg) dose.
IOSAT Potassium Iodine: Recommended Single Dosage by Age
Age Group | Predicted Thyroid Exposure | IOSAT Potassium (KI) IODIDE dose (mg) | Number or fraction of 130 mg tablets | Number or fraction of 65 mg tablets | Milliliters (mL) of oral solution, 65 mg/mL |

Once you are no longer exposed to radioactive iodine, you don’t need to continue taking Iosat Potassium Iodide tablets, but keep them available for emergency use. Emergency alert officials will alert when the nuclear radiation emergency is past, so that you know when to stop taking IOSAT Potassium Iodide tablets.
Infants (under 1 month) have the highest risk of developing thyroid cancer from contamination with radioactive iodine. More than a single dose may lead to later problems with normal development. Other protective measures should be considered. In cases where more than one dose is necessary, medical follow up may be necessary.
We suggest storing at least one package of 14 tablets per adult, per emergency location in the family. You may not be at home where you may keep a package. Keeping one package in your vehicle is a safe consideration. Heat or cold will not affect the tablets. Storing one package of 14 tablets at each likely emergency location is suggested (home, 2nd home, relative’s home, childcare, office, etc. Iosat Potassium Iodide tablets should be immediately available in the event of an emergency caused by nuclear radiation from a nuclear reactor or nuclear occurrence. It is recommenede3d To be most effective, the first dose should be administered 1-2 hours after exposure to radioactive iodine, after notification of a nuclear emergency by public health officials. Administer one dose per adult and child, per dosage guideline above, each duy during the nuclear event, same time every day, until your family has reached a safe environment, uncontaminated area. STOP taking the Iosat Potassium Iodide tablets as directed by public health officials. Any unused Iosat tablets are sealed with a foil top and can be used as needed in the future.
Harmful Health Effects
Potassium Iodide can have harmful health effects if overdosing occurs, and can cause allergic reactions to some people. The risk of harm from KI increases when it is taken improperly and there is no radioactive emergency. Take exactly as directed by a medical or certified public health official.
