How many people do you know who would appreciate an emergency weather radio for the holidays?
No fair saying “Everyone.” That may be true, but it’s too easy.
To make it more manageable, I’ll rephrase the question. How many types of people do you know who would appreciate receiving an emergency weather radio as a holiday gift?
I gave this some thought recently and came up with seven types. Or more accurately, people who engage in different types of activities who would benefit from having one.

So here goes. If you know of anyone who fits in one of these categories, you may have just stumbled upon the perfect holiday gift for them.
And as you might already be tired of hearing about, everyone is encouraged to order holiday gifts early this year. That’s due to supply chain problems.
Because we’re already in mid-November, it’s definitely not too early to order your holiday gifts.
I can pretty much guarantee you that anyone who opens a new emergency weather radio as one of their holiday gifts this year will be both surprised and delighted.
Weather radios save lives
Here’s that list of seven “types” I promised:
- Fisherman/hunter
- RV’er
- Hiker/camper
- Tailgater
- Prepper/survivalist
- Family member/friend who lives in a severe weather zone
- Anyone who owns a cellphone
The first five types listed above have something in common. They all spend a considerable amount of time outdoors.
And that means they are more likely than most to get caught outdoors when severe weather rushes in. It’s not an exaggeration to say this radio can be a lifesaver.
We’ve heard story after story from people who found themselves outdoors when extreme weather began threatening. But they were able to get to shelter in time because they received an advance warning from their emergency weather radio.
The sixth type listed above could be just about anyone. Those who live in areas that occasionally experience hurricanes, tornadoes, lightning storms, winter storms or derechos could all use warnings that emergency weather radios provide.
As far as the seventh type listed above – anyone who owns a cellphone – I’ll get to that in a moment.
Versatile and dependable
If you’re not so sure an emergency weather radio is the right gift for one or more of your family members, friends, neighbors or co-workers, maybe you’re not aware of everything these radios offer.
First of all, they are considered an emergency kit essential by emergency authorities. Especially radios that provide National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather alerts.
Cellphones are very important, but cell towers and networks are vulnerable. They’re susceptible to service disruptions. Emergency radios, on the other hand, are dependable.
They can give you weather alerts, evacuation routes and other breaking news you need – when you need it. And the best ones also include a flashlight and a variety of ways to charge them (solar, hand-crank, batteries and USB).
And now we come to our seventh type. Anyone who owns a cellphone can benefit from an emergency weather radio because it includes a power bank to charge that phone. As well as your USB-compatible devices.
People who do not own an emergency weather radio are missing an important part of preparedness. You can help them fill that void with a holiday gift. And now is the perfect time to do it.
